I really hate how 'good' vampires are always 'vegetarian', especially considering how they're not even vegetarian (I don't understand how from a vampiric perspective, drinking the blood of animals is morally superior to drinking the blood of humans. They're both prey after all. Alright we know we're special, but why would a vampire think that? I don't see how turning into a vampire should not also alter one's mindset about the 'circle of life' and all that jazz. Even if it didn't, I still want to know why the non-human blood drinkers are to be respected by the reader any more than we do hardcore religious ascetics. Sure, it's fascinating and perhaps uplifting to see the strength of the human will exemplified, but let's face it, we also think they're crazy). Is it endemic of our privileged status as ex-prey that we see anything that might eat us (even if fictional) as inherently evil?

Or is it because we're so fond of developing huge non-issues so that our characters can feel 'tormented' about themselves to elevate our - let's face it - all too often bog standard fantasy?

I'm also curious if anyone knows of any ancient (well, ancient to... late-renaissance perhaps) technqiues used to forecast volcanic eruptions. Earthquakes are a pretty good indicator (I hear!) but I'm particularly interested in the possibility of 'measuring' sulphur dioxide levels in the air via some natural, but obviously misunderstood, phenomena.
Mood:: 'curious' curious
