Espeically as they weren't originally medieval at all *smacks head* but you know what I mean. The culture surrounding the monastic life - from the changing of one's name to one which you think reflects more of your true nature to the immersion into a community that operates on slightly different rules to the 'outside' or RL - and indeed, the acceptance of said culture as representative of some sort of ideal, has always struck me as rather contemporary.

Mind you, I'm still on my 'discovering-so-much-more-than-I-could-have-ever thought-about-post-Classical-antiquity' high so I would say that. When I start making apologetics for Inquisitions, you'll know I've gone beyond the point of help.
