I was pleasantly surprised by Fanny Hill on BBC3 - there was a decided lack of cut glass accents and intermittent cries of 'zounds!' 'fie!' and 'die, blackest fiend!', which is more Batman than 18th century, but turns up a surprising amount in costume dramas. The sex was also... sexy (though [understandably?] understated compared to the thrilling descriptions in the literature), which is a rarity these days where sex is usually depicted as combination of a sort of pantomime-styled thrusting (oh no he didn't!) and horsey sound effects - great fun, I'm sure, but amusing rather than arousing. *shrugs* Or maybe I just have high expectations...
Another period piece that I found quite enjoyable was 'The Affair of the Necklace' where everyone spoke as if they had been educated by a Royal governess whilst strapped to a backboard, and gave each other penetrating looks, but was still great to watch (I ought to watch 'Marie Antoinette' for comparisons, but I am both lazy and poor).

The costumes seem pretty in a standard sort of way, but nothing truly spectacular. Then again, I've been spoiled by all these fantatsic Georgian/Roman epics, so what would I know?

And I'm easily satisfied with costumes, I'm afraid - as long as they're pretty and ostentatious rather than the modern understatements I'm happy.
