I usually do a write up when I get back home, but because t-mobile broadband is a wanker and a half, the post is a bit late.

Personally I thought this year's was way better than the 'thing' last year, even if it seemed a bit quieter to some. I saw some really great new stuff, came across some familiar faces, and spent faaar too much of hard earned taxes that I like to call my student loan. All for a good cause, Mr Torygraph-reader, all for a good cause...
Let's start at the very beginning...
OK, so I was mistaken about the table. Turns out I was with the 'Comics Creator's Guild' rather than 'Soaring Penguin'. To our left was Paddy Brown, whose table featured 'The Cattle Raid of Cooley' series, based on Irish mythology. To our right was Lando from the 'Decadence' group whose page can be found here. He and his friend have a small press thing going on complete with music samples (listen while you read!) and beautiful posters. I'm rather taken by Sem's style - I might appropriate the griminess for Captain Hamish stuff.
Arrived bang on time (basically, half an hour early in comic-convention time), so I bought some Space Babe 113 comics and said hi to John Maybury and his wife (tres nice). I've linked them up enough times and my fingers hurt, so I'll leave you lot to google him. Went around the few tables that were set up and found a guy from London Horror Comics (www.londonhorrorcomic.com), which seemed kind of interesting (not that I'm into horror comics, but I liked the artwork). Left the hall for a hot chocolate, caught up with Space Babe and went back inside where everyone was now ready and met up with John Anderson and co. Said hello, how d'you do, then went back to the convention in earnest!
Upstairs was where it really went downhill for me - bought a tonne of badges for some reason (I never do that) but at least I have everyone's birthday presents sorted...
First thing I noticed was Ms Parkinson's table - some pretty gorgeous productions here and there (I happily snaffled a copy of 'The Exiles Daughter'). There was also
shakino from whom I bought some postcards, though alas, no comic, as I could foresee my budget approaching, but I did get some badges. Last but not least was another new discovery whose work can be found here. I just had to get one of the comics because I hadn't seen anything like it - really exquisite Beatrix Potter style drawings with a sentimental hook for suckers like me. The artist is very sweet too.
Also met up with James from 'Beaver and Steve' again. Alas! There may be no more Beaver and Steve to liven my day, though he promised an extra-exciting fill-in. I remain skeptical. However, for friendship's sake, I actually bought a comic for once.
In fact, I bought a lot of comics this time, and other stuff, which I never do, for I am made of fail. As it stands, I am indeed made of win this time, but very poor win, if I do say so myself.
Books/long comics/stapled pages:
Undertow - by Ellen Lindner who I am in LOVE with at the moment (we also got chatting about the naffness that is Topshop, the difficulty of learning about football - soccer to the f-list - and the smallness of the world - her hubbie also went to Manchester to study Physics) as well as her good pal and co-tabler...
Jeremy Dennis (whose flyer I will find again - suffice to say, I think she's cool).
Short Stuff - Chris Doherty
The Escapist - Tom England part of the 'Mallard' small press (http://mallardsmallpress.blogspot.com/) who is very sweet and let me have the comic for free.
When Pigeons Weep - Howard Hardiman who I am also in love with: he too sees the stupidity that is Danone produced anti-bloating yogurt drinks aimed at women who cannot fart. I also got a striped plasticine blob from his table. It is currently making friends with a china cat.

Howard can also be found at http://cutebutsad.co.uk.
Rant - a completely different sort of thing from what I'm usually into by Andy. Rather Beano-esque, but I quite like it.
Mind Hack - David Wynne
Robot - People I know by Timothy Winchester, who I also heart muchos because il est tres amusant and has great hair. He also used his LJ for silly and nefarious purposes as a 16 year old, which everyone has done, but takes a very special sort of person to admit it.
Merchandise/cool stuff/general:
Bogus Baby - these guys do the coollest handmade brooch-thingies ever. I bought two and have solemnly sworn to wear them often.
Moogs Kewell - http://mooglybear.etsy.com (the place where cuteness aboundeth - I have a sticker and octopus pencil to prove it)
The Polaroid Press
Odd Fish is a webcomic as well, but with nice things to be bought as well, like kawaii-cthulhus *coughs* fluffy Lovecrafts...
Edds world - also features animation and random violence apparently
ACTUAL webcomics (yes, yes, I take my time with these things, I know...):

www.ninja-bunny.com
www.markosia.com
www.favouritecrayon.co.uk
www.kazmanira.co.uk
www.myspace.com/chunkymonkeypoo - Awesome to see the artist in the flesh having followed her online for a while. She was wearing some rather nifty aviator goggles as well, of which I would have taken a picture, but that would have been sad.
www.fetishman.co.uk - Again, I've recced these guys before, but now I insist everyone buys/reads issue #8 in which fetishman goes steampunk. Sheer fabulousness.
www.InanimateObjectives.com
www.darkencomic.com - There was something rather Faith Hicks about her style which I liked. Also, the artist is really nice too, which helped!

http://tozocomic.com - For some reason when I first saw this comic, the artwork put me off (even though I love Tin-Tin) but since then it's grown on me.

Zines/publishers/le stuff:
The London Zine Symposium, 2009
Luci76 presented by the London Underground Comics group
Caption 2009 at the East Oxford Comunity Centre this year
The Small Press Expo 2009
Indie Manga press, and yes, I know technically I'm not a big fan of non-Japanese manga (or Japanese manga for a start, it often seems), but they are doing some nice looking stuff which isn't the usual hackneyed pulp
The Carboard Press. I was sooo tempted to buy one of their little books but alas, the bank was broken. The people behind it are very cool and obviously uber-talented.
Art Made Easy. 'Nuff said, really...
So as you can see I had a grand old time. Hopefully acquired some fresh meat for the LJ/myspace/blogspot flists and also got some inspiration along the way. Will probably see a couple of the old faces if I go to Bristol - but can't wait until next year.
