Watched the 2005 Pride and Prejudice this afternoon and have to say that it was by far better than the earlier, famous Colin Firth version. It was a pity that this version was shorter, but then, it was made for cinema, not TV.

Some things, that felt right for the film, but I wasn't too sure about were there: the tenderer relationship between Mr and Mrs Bennett, for one (though that must make sense if they are to live as close together as they do) though I suppose it is true that there are always moments of love that even the worst matched couple in all creation experience. Nevertheless, their general relationship put that in perspective, so that was okay.

Country proto-middle class family, portrayed as such, unlike the Bennetts in the earlier version who just seemed like whining posh nobs. Here, one could see that the Bennetts were not wealthy. Dude, they had hay everywhere! And cows and geese that got in everyone's way! And Mud (with a capital 'M')! Wonderful.

This Darcy was (to me, anyway) far and away much better, but then, I'm not exactly fond of Colin Firth to be honest. Bingley was slightly pantomime-esque, but then, so was the other one *shrugs*. What can they do after all...

Oh and Mr Collins rocked. I was both repelled and sympathetic with him, which is as it should be. He is ridiculous, after all. However, I didn't like how they made Charlotte Lucas so fawning to Lady Catherine. I expected her to be more wry, but no matter: a very minor quibble.

Having great difficulty translating 'Electra', (God, what a bitch!) in between Diana Wynne Jones, heh...
